A New Year

School is just around the corner, so take advantage of the last week of freedom with one of the many new books in the Teen Corner. The "Summer Reading" display will soon leave to make room for our regular "New Books" section. In the mean time, keep an eye out for the light blue "New" stickers on books on the shelves.

With the new school year comes the first meeting of the Youth Advisory Board (YAB for short). Our first meeting of the year will be Tuesday, September 21, 4-5pm in the Library Activity Room (ground floor). If you want to get involved in the library, earn volunteer hours or just have a say in what books/music/programs there are for teens then stop by. And bring a friend (or two). YAB is open to anyone in middle school or high school. Oh, and there will definitely be food at the meeting....I'm working on determining what kind.

New Books

A lot of new books have entered the Teen Corner recently...

Be More Chill by Ned Vizzini, YA FIC VIZ

So B. It: A Novel by Sarah Weeks, YA FIC WEE

The Key to the Golden Firebird by Maureen Johnson, YA FIC JOH

Naked Without a Hat by Jeanne Willis, YA FIC WIL

Dunk by David Lubar, YA PB L

Some graphic novels...

Hellboy: Wake the Devil by Mike Mignola, YA Graphic MIG

Meridian: Coming Home by Barbara Kesel, YA Graphic KES

Heaven's War by Micah Harris, YA Graphic HAR

And, finally, one that I just finished reading...

Tell it to Naomi by Daniel Ehrenhaft, YA PB E, is a hilarious story about sophomore Dave Rosen and the trouble he's gotten himself into. You see, Dave is really Naomi. No, that's not right. Dave is writing an advice column for his high school newspaper and he's posing as his older sister, Naomi. It all started out as a plan to get the gorgeous Celeste Fanucci to fall in love with him but, like most schemes, it got out of hand way too quickly. Pick up this quick, fun read to find out how Dave gets out of his mess. Or does he?

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants - The Movie

Filming has already begun on the movie version of Ann Brashare's Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. According to Movie Web, Alexis Bledel (from Gilmore Girls) will play Lena, Amber Tamblyn (of Joan of Arcadia) will play Tibby, America Ferrara is Carmen and Blake Lively will be Bridget. Right now the movie is set to be released in 2005 (my bet is for a summer release). If you can't wait until then, maybe January's publication of Girls in Pants: The Third Summer of the Sisterhood will come quickly enough!

Time to change those science books

If the textbook for your science class says that Saturn has 31 moons, then it's out of date. The correct number is 33. NASA scientists have just announced that two new moons were spotted by the Cassini spacecraft studying Saturn. As of yesterday they were still unnamed...any ideas or recommendations to NASA for moon names?

Adult Books for Teens

You may have noticed that there are books in the YA section that your parents, and other adults, are just as excited about reading as you are. There is a whole world of books out there that are written for adults, but are also perfect for teens. Some that come to mind are The Lovely Bones, The Secret Life of Bees and Ender's Game.

The Alex Awards are given each year by the Young Adult Library Services Association to adult books that are of interest to teens. They are the best of the best for the year. The 2004 awards have just been announced and include:
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, YA FIC HAD
- Persepolis, YA Graphic SAT
- The Time Traveler's Wife, FIC NIF
- Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, FIC PAC

For more books on the list go to the Alex Awards site.
